The official trailer for Terry Gilliam's "the Zero Theorum" has arrived

Terry Gilliam is a director who you either love or hate, often alternating between the two over the course of a film. Gilliam is, to me the master of the dark fairy tale and loves characters with abnormal psychological makeups. The director of the Monty Python Films, Time Bandits, Brazil, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is back to have another go at us.

Gilliam's latest "The Zero Theorem" is the story of, according to IMDB, “A computer hacker's goal to discover the reason for human existence continually finds his work interrupted thanks to the Management; this time, they send a teenager and lusty love interest to distract him.”

The film was premiered at the Venice Film Festival last year to mixed reviews. Mary Corliss of Time called the film "a spectacle that demands to be cherished — as long as the society Gilliam portrays is a satire, not a prophesy" and Xan Brooks of the Guardian called it a "sagging bag of half-cooked ideas, a dystopian thriller with runaway dysentery, a film that wears its metaphorical trousers around its metaphorical ankles."

I see all of this as a good sign. A Terry Gilliam film that received overwhelmingly good reviews would be a radical departure from what we've come to expect from him. His films can be fun, exciting, tragically comic and comically tragic, dark and disorienting but they will always work parts of your brain that standard Hollywood fare does not.

The Zero Theorum stars Christoph Waltz, Mélanie Thierry, David Thewlis, Lucas Hedges, Matt Damon, Ben Whishaw and Tilda Swinton. While, hopefully, the release of this trailer means that it is on its way shortly - no North American release date has been set.
