Does Game of Thrones Owe (Part of) its Success to Piracy

One of the problems with modern interpretation of copyright is discussed in this video: Those who produce media products (books, movies, television shows, music etc.,) want desperately to be a part of the popular culture. However becoming part of the culture, in 2013, almost requires copyright infringement to take place. This includes file sharing, mash ups, parodies, fan fiction and other things that could be construed as violations of copyright.
