Dear America: Leave the Groundhog Alone

Two states, Ohio and Maryland, have now filed charges against Punxsutawney Phil (the groundhog) for fraud because he falsely predicted an early spring. I know that it's tongue in cheek and all in good fun but trust me, this is not a road you want to go down.

You see Phil is a rodent, specifically: "The groundhog (Marmota monax), also known as a woodchuck, whistle-pig, or in some areas as a land-beaver, is a rodent of the family Sciuridae, belonging to the group of large ground squirrels known as marmots." He is not a meteorologist and has no magical powers that allow him to see the future.

Most sane people know this, but the United States is a very superstitious country, a very litigious country and there are many Americans who believe some really stupid things. Setting any precedent that allows them to think they can sue or seek prosecution against their imaginary friends, deities, spirits or animals believed to have magical powers is a bad idea. Before you know it you'll have people suing Jesus every time a dog dies and filing charges against god anytime they pray really hard for something and don't get it and filing eviction notices against ghosts.

I'm all for a good sense of humor, just remember who your audience is.
