Did You Know: Planning Is Already Underway for a Mars Colony

NASA announced today that they are planning another Mars rover for 2020 but if Elon Musk has his way, that Rover will arrive to scout out settlement locations, just a few years ahead of settlers. It is an ambitious plan and any number of things could go wrong with it but, if it makes any difference, Musk is not just 'a guy who thinks it'd be neat.'

Elon Musk, for those who don't know, was the inspiration for the film version of Tony Stark. He was the co-founder of Pay Pal, then the co-founder of Tesla Motors where he helped to create the first modern electric vehicle (and where he is still head of product design). He is the Chairman of the Musk foundation, a philanthropic organization devoted to science education, children's health and green energy and sits on the boards of several other charitable and philanthropic organizations. He had the original concept for, is the largest shareholder and chairman of the board of Solar City. Most importantly, for these purposes, he is the founder of SpaceX, which develops and builds space vehicles.

So, according to that guy, within 10-20 years (20 as a worst case scenario) his company will be shuttling 80,000 passengers annually to a new Mars Colony.

According to Musk:
"An asteroid or a super volcano could destroy us, and we face risks the dinosaurs never saw: An engineered virus, inadvertent creation of a micro black hole, catastrophic global warming or some as-yet-unknown technology could spell the end of us. Humankind evolved over millions of years, but in the last sixty years atomic weaponry created the potential to extinguish ourselves. Sooner or later, we must expand life beyond this green and blue ball—or go extinct."
