Video: The Onion Nails Social Media "Gurus"

Having worked in social media I can honestly say that the Onion's take (below) is pretty bang on. It's not that there isn't value in social media, there is. The problem is that many of the people who are out selling it are salespeople. If they weren't selling social media they would be selling Shamwow, or Jesus or hair tonic or ... something.

The other problem is that these are the people that business people love. They don't understand social media, but they love to make grandiose promises about what it will do for you and your business. I believe that many of them are the same people that sold the 'dot com gold rush' back in the 90s. Business executives, for their part, eat it up. Nine times out of ten they will hire someone who uses all the right jargon and makes grand promises, even if they don't keep them over someone who actually knows what they are talking about and makes lesser promises they can keep. This is part of the reason why almost all businesses suck at social media.

In short, if this guy shows up at your office first, put your wallet and your watch in a drawer that locks and second print yourself a social media bullshit bingo card so you have something to entertain you in the meeting.
